Meet Dr. Art McCulloch
Making a difference in the lives of others has always been a driving a force of mine. My journey began in 1967 when I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where I worked as a technician on the F-4 Phantom jet. Serving as an E-5 sergeant, I developed a strong sense of discipline and commitment to excellence. After graduation from Ohio State University in 1977, I was accepted to medical school. My journey led me to UNC Chapel Hill where I completed my residency in anesthesiology and earned the position of Chief Resident.
To fulfill my commitment for a scholarship I was awarded I joined the United States Air Force as an attending anesthesiologist at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. My dedication to the medical field led me to a teaching role as a Clinical Assistant Professor at UNC for two years. However, my passion for providing direct patient care brought me to Southeast Anesthesia in Charlotte, where I specialized in neuroanesthesiology. I held various leadership positions within Southeast Anesthesiology, serving as Chief in multiple locations until 2018. In 2002, I was appointed to the North Carolina Medical Board, where I served for six years and rose to the position of President in 2006.
During my tenure, the Board tackled important ethical issues, such as physician participation in capital punishment, and implemented significant changes to enhance transparency and accountability within the medical profession. My commitment to serving those in need extended beyond the borders of the United States. In 2009, following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, I organized a team of nurse anesthetists to provide critical medical care to the victims. Despite the challenging circumstances, the work we did in Haiti remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
Now, I am seeking election to the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, District 5. While the Board has been dedicated to its mission, it has been comprised entirely of members from the Democratic Party in recent years. I firmly believe that a diverse range of perspectives is crucial for healthy discussions and effective results. By bringing a fresh voice and a different viewpoint to the table, I aim to contribute to the advancement of our county and the well-being of its residents. With my extensive background in healthcare and leadership, I am confident in my ability to make a positive impact as a member of the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners. I am dedicated to fostering collaboration, transparency, and accountability in local governance. I look forward to the opportunity to serve the residents of District 5 and address the pressing issues facing our community.
